Craftsmanship
The Creative Studio
On the web, the image reigns and fashion is followed through pixels.
Behind the screen, discover my reality as a French designer: my craftsmanship, my passion for creation and my vision of fashion today.
I open the doors of my workshop to you.
A studio in the heart of Paris
My creative studio nestles in the heart of the 8th arrondissement of Paris. A few square metres, a worktable, a computer and a sewing machine: this is where I design and make every accessory, alone. Working alone is a choice I stand by: by keeping every step in my own hands, from the first sketch to the final stitch, I keep complete control of what I create.
This deliberately small scale is also what makes a direct and sincere relationship with my customers and my stockists possible. I know my products down to the smallest detail; I can advise, adjust, personalise. That is the whole difference of an independent fashion brand, conceived and made on a human scale, in a workshop rather than a factory.
“Creativity is intelligence having fun.”
Albert Einstein
A piece is always born long before the sewing machine. It all begins with a long phase of exploration: moodboards I assemble as the mood takes me, sketchbooks, patterns to cut out and tape together (again and again), colours and images I collect “for later, you never know”, embroidery or print designs piling up on the computer.
Then comes the test of the material. I touch the fabrics, compare the drapes, observe the way the light catches, the colour pairings.
Each of these elements is a piece of a puzzle that will, as if by magic, end up making sense, coming together and telling one and the same story.
The art of personalisation
In a world where standardisation is queen, it is impossible to win the race against the clock of mass production.
So I made the opposite choice: to make one piece after another. Personalising an accessory means refusing standardisation and accepting to take the time: embroidering a first name or a memory, choosing a colour combination, matching a chain, shaping an object that will exist in only one copy: yours.
It is a slower, more demanding way of working, and certainly far less profitable, but that is precisely where the value lies: in the attention paid to each order, and in the certainty, for the woman who wears it, of holding a unique accessory, imagined for her and made to last.
From the studio to the screen
When a piece is finished, a second job begins: it has to be photographed, staged and brought to life online. Here again, I handle everything myself: the online shop, the website, the retouching and the direction of the images. It is the precise moment when my very real work meets the digital world.
To give my creations a staging that a designer working alone could never produce in a photo studio, I rely on artificial intelligence, in complete transparency. The craftsmanship itself does not change: it stays in the hand, in the material, in the gesture. AI only touches the backdrop, never the product, which remains true to reality.
It is this balance, a profoundly human making elevated by the tools of my time, that defines Leslie Sulman today.
